Canine Liver Enzymes and What High Results Mean

A routine blood test can bring an unexpected call from the vet: your dog's liver values are raised. Seeing abnormal canine liver enzymes can feel alarming, especially when your dog still seems happy, hungry and full of energy. But an elevated result is a clue, not a diagnosis. The next step is working out why it has changed and whether your dog needs monitoring, further testing or treatment.
What canine liver enzymes tell your vet
The liver is one of the body’s busiest organs. It processes nutrients, stores energy, helps manage hormones, makes proteins and supports the removal of waste products. Because it has so many jobs, changes in liver-related blood values can occur for several reasons - some minor and temporary, others requiring prompt attention.
Liver enzymes are substances found within liver cells or tissues connected to the liver and bile ducts. When cells are irritated, damaged or under pressure, more of these substances can enter the bloodstream. A blood test measures that increase.
The key point is that a raised enzyme does not automatically measure how well the liver is functioning. It can show that the liver has been affected, but it does not explain the cause or predict the outcome on its own. Your vet will consider the number, the pattern of results, your dog’s age, breed, medicines, diet and symptoms before deciding what comes next.
The liver values commonly checked in dogs
Your vet may discuss several markers. They each provide a slightly different piece of the picture.
ALT
Alanine aminotransferase, or ALT, is often associated with liver-cell irritation or injury. A high ALT can occur with inflammation, infection, toxin exposure, poor blood flow to the liver or some hormonal conditions. It is useful, but it cannot identify the underlying problem by itself.
ALP
Alkaline phosphatase, or ALP, can increase when bile flow is affected. It may also rise with certain medications, bone growth in young dogs and conditions such as Cushing’s disease. Older dogs can sometimes have a significant ALP increase without appearing unwell, but that still deserves veterinary follow-up rather than guesswork.
AST and GGT
Aspartate aminotransferase, or AST, may rise with liver issues but can also be linked to muscle injury. Gamma-glutamyl transferase, or GGT, is another marker that can help point towards bile duct or gallbladder involvement. Looking at these values together is more useful than focusing on one isolated number.
Your vet may also assess bilirubin, albumin, cholesterol, glucose, bile acids and clotting ability. These are not all enzymes, yet they can help show whether the liver is performing its essential functions.
Why liver enzymes may be raised
There is no single cause of raised liver values. Sometimes the explanation is straightforward, such as a medication effect or a short-lived digestive upset. In other cases, further investigation is needed to rule out a more serious condition.
Common possibilities include dietary indiscretion, exposure to toxins, infection, inflammation of the liver, pancreatitis, gallbladder disease, dental disease, diabetes, thyroid problems and hormonal disorders. Long-term use of some medicines, including certain steroids and anti-seizure drugs, can also affect blood results.
Age and breed matter too. Young, growing dogs may have a higher ALP because of bone activity. Some breeds have inherited tendencies towards liver or copper-storage conditions. A one-off mild increase in a well dog may be handled differently from rapidly rising values in a dog that is losing weight and refusing food.
Supplements should also be part of the conversation. Bring the container or a complete ingredient list to the appointment, including chews, powders, herbal blends and human products. “Natural” does not always mean suitable for every dog, particularly when the liver is already under strain.
Signs that need a quicker veterinary call
Some dogs with raised enzymes have no obvious symptoms. Others show signs that should not wait for a routine recheck. Contact your vet promptly if your dog develops vomiting, diarrhoea, reduced appetite, marked tiredness, increased thirst, frequent urination, a swollen abdomen or unexplained weight loss.
Yellowing of the gums, whites of the eyes or skin can indicate jaundice and needs urgent veterinary advice. So can confusion, staring, wobbliness, collapse, seizures, black stools or unusual bleeding. These signs do not always mean liver failure, but they can indicate that your dog needs immediate assessment.
Never try to manage suspected toxin exposure at home. Human painkillers, xylitol, grapes and raisins, some mushrooms, rodenticides and certain household chemicals can be dangerous. If you think your dog has eaten something harmful, call your vet or an emergency veterinary service straight away and keep any packaging available.
What happens after an abnormal result
A sensible plan often starts with context. Your vet may ask whether the blood sample was taken fasting, whether your dog has recently been ill, and what medicines or supplements they take. They may recommend repeating bloodwork after a set period, particularly if the increase is mild and your dog is otherwise well.
If results are more concerning, investigations can include a full blood count, urine testing, bile acid testing, an abdominal ultrasound or X-rays. In selected cases, your vet may suggest testing for infectious diseases, checking hormone levels or taking a liver sample. Each test has a purpose, cost and level of invasiveness, so the right approach depends on the findings already available.
Do not stop prescribed medication without veterinary instruction. The medicine may be essential, and stopping suddenly can create a different health risk. Instead, ask whether the dose, timing or treatment plan should be reviewed.
Everyday support while your dog is being assessed
Your dog’s care plan should be based on the diagnosis, not a generic liver-health checklist. Still, a few practical habits can support the process. Feed a consistent, complete diet unless your vet recommends a therapeutic food. Avoid fatty table scraps, mystery treats and sudden diet changes, which can complicate digestive or pancreatic issues.
Keep fresh water available and note changes in appetite, stools, energy, thirst and toileting. A simple daily record is often more useful than trying to remember small changes at the next appointment. Weighing your dog every week or two can also flag gradual loss or gain that is easy to miss.

Questions worth asking your vet
Clear questions help you make decisions without getting lost in medical terminology. Ask which values are abnormal, how high they are compared with the laboratory range, and whether the pattern suggests liver-cell irritation, bile-flow changes or something outside the liver.
It is also reasonable to ask whether your dog needs a fasted recheck, what symptoms to watch for, and when results should be repeated. A raised blood result is not a verdict on your dog’s future. Stay observant, follow the testing plan and give your vet a complete picture of what your dog eats, takes and has been exposed to.
