Melatonin for Dogs: How It Works and When to Use It
Share
If your dog struggles with anxiety, disrupted sleep, or seasonal coat changes, you may have heard about melatonin as a natural option. But how does it actually work, and is it right for your dog? Here's what the science says.
What Is Melatonin?
Melatonin is a hormone naturally produced by the pineal gland in both humans and dogs. It plays a central role in regulating the sleep-wake cycle (circadian rhythm) and is released in response to darkness. In dogs, melatonin levels naturally rise in the evening to signal that it's time to rest.
What Can Melatonin Help With?
Research and veterinary guidance — including from the University of Tennessee College of Veterinary Medicine — supports melatonin supplementation in dogs for several conditions:
- Anxiety and stress — including noise phobias (fireworks, thunderstorms), separation anxiety, and travel stress
- Sleep disturbances — particularly in older dogs whose natural melatonin production may decline
- Seasonal flank alopecia — a condition causing cyclical hair loss, where melatonin has shown positive results in clinical settings
- Cushing's disease support — often used alongside lignans as part of a natural management protocol
Dosage Guidance
Dosage is based on body weight. General veterinary guidelines suggest:
- Small dogs (under 10kg): 1–3mg
- Medium dogs (10–25kg): 3–6mg
- Large dogs (over 25kg): 6mg or more
Always consult your vet before starting any supplement, particularly if your dog is on other medications or has an underlying health condition.
Choosing the Right Product
K9 Select offers melatonin tablets in a range of strengths — from 1mg for small dogs up to 6mg for larger breeds — in both beef and peanut butter flavours to make administration easy. For dogs that may also benefit from lignan support, our Multi-Formula tablets combining HMR Lignans and Melatonin are available in small, medium, and large dog formulas.
Is Melatonin Safe for Dogs?
Melatonin is generally considered safe for dogs when used at appropriate doses. Side effects are rare but can include mild drowsiness. Importantly, always check that any melatonin product does not contain xylitol — an artificial sweetener that is toxic to dogs. All K9 Select melatonin products are xylitol-free.
As with any supplement, consult your veterinarian before use, especially for pregnant dogs or those with existing health conditions.
